“Our clients wanted a contemporary home which can be challenging to build
in many environments; the incredibly traditional neighborhoods on Kiawah
can be even more challenging. Contemporary architecture is about paring down
everything to its simplest form. An architect knows how to deal with shading
and orienting the glass so the home will not turn into an oven. The entire steel
structure of this home was left exposed and given a blackened finish which
made the interior expression very honest. Furthermore, these steel connections
gave us detail in the interior, and the all-glass view to the lagoon on their
property added to the interior ambiance. To make the home match the Kiawah
neighborhood, we put on a very conservative presence along the street to blend
in with the more traditional style of the neighbors’ homes.
