“Because of the potential for leaks, as a standard of practice I avoid installing rooftop decks over heated, finished spaces. At this home, though, we recognized thatthe opportunity for incredible panoramic views was too great to ignore. I detailed a working, low-pitched roof of soldered copper that turns up the side walls, creating a water-proof pan system. Detailing also included spacing the hardwood traffic deck above the copper with a treated wood ‘sleeper’ system. The roof pan slopes to an open side with a proper gutter to insure positive drainage. It all fell into place perfectly.”
